Skin Cancer Hospital Treats Elderly, Young Patients with no Difference
A skin cancer hospital will treat skin cancers in young adults the same as they will in older adults or they should according to the outcome of a recent University of Missouri-Columbia survey.
According to the doctor who surveyed the dermatologists and nurses, there should be no difference in the age when it comes to treating patients with skin cancers – they should all be treated as if they are young and vibrant and care about the cosmetic outcome.
A dermatologist may be the first to diagnose an elderly patient with a skin cancer and then, depending on the severity of the cancer, they might recommend the patient visit an oncologist for treatments. Skin cancer is often like an iceberg, small on the surface and large beneath.
In some cases of elderly patients, especially those who may be hard of hearing or have some form of dementia may need to have a caretaker or family member present to help them understand what is happening to them, to take notes or just as a comfort.
Some of the elderly patients who visit a cancer treatment center may opt for a less aggressive treatment such as a topical cream whereas a younger patient might go for a more aggressive treatment like surgery because of the difference in their rate of recovery time.
Many young adults do not believe they will ever get skin cancer; however, doctors are now seeing more and more younger people with skin cancer because of the powerful sun and the damage it does to skin. In addition, many young people go to tanning booths to get a deep, dark tan in half the time but they are more dangerous than the sun’s ultraviolet rays according to recent public safety studies.
There are over 100 cancers, nearing 120, and they are categorized into 14 different groups: gland; cartilage; red blood cells; white blood cells; liver; fat; blood vessels; pigment cells; muscles; bones; bone marrow; bladder; eye and brain. An average of one in three people will be touched by cancer at some point in their lifetime and the growing number of skin cancers is astonishing because it is a preventable cancer with advancements in sun-blockers and sunscreens, even a simple hat would help.
